Nabatäa (also Nabatiye , Arabic النبطية) is the administrative seat of the Lebanese governorate of Nabatäa and the district of the same name in southern Lebanon and has around 120,000 permanent residents.

description

Nabatea is the most important city in the Jebel Amil area (historical name of southern Lebanon until the founding of modern Lebanon in 1920 ). The city's residents are predominantly Shiites, with a smaller minority being Greek Catholic Christians .

Every Monday is market day and traders and customers flock to the city from the Nabataean neighborhood to trade goods. Every year Shiites in Nabataea on Ashura commemorate the Battle of Karbala in honor of the martyrdom of Imam Houssein . On this occasion tens of thousands of mostly Shiite visitors come to the city to take part in the religious ceremonies . Nabatea is the hometown of the theological scholar Sheikh Aref al-Zein and the scholars Hassan Kamel al-Sabbah , Ahmad Reda and Mohammed Jaber Al Safa. Jasin Jaber is the city's mayor. The largest family is the Jaber family, with an estimated 10,000 registered voters in Nabatea.

history

After the first Israeli-Arab war , hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven from their homes or fled. The Nabatäa refugee camp was established near Nabataea, to which the refugees moved. In 1974 this was bombed and destroyed by the Israeli air force. About 27 people were killed. The refugees moved to the Ein el Helweh camp near Sidon , among other places . The area around Nabataea was particularly hard hit by the bombing by the Israeli Air Force in 2006. It is estimated that around one million Israeli duds are in southern Lebanon. These represent a great danger to the population.
