Nachtschatten is a German metal band from Baden-Württemberg . They belong to the sub-genre Melodic Death Metal and are known for their metaphorical German-language texts. Since the live premiere of the songs from their EP Leuchtfeuer in 2018, Nightshade has appeared in stage outfits and a comprehensive light / stage show . They symbolize the crew of a lost tanker ship, which is referred to in the song of the same name as the "Steel Goddess".

history

prehistory

Nachtschatten emerged from a folk metal band of the same name , which was founded in Karlsruhe in 2008. Here the later founding members Daniel Wengle (bass) and Andreas Siefert (guitar) met. Since there were no publications until the dissolution in 2010, Andreas Siefert and Daniel Wengle decided to adopt the name in the newly founded melodic death metal band Nachtschatten. The founding date of the band is sometimes incorrectly given as 2008.

2010–2013: first years

After the re-establishment, the other instrumental line-up Manuel Balzer (guitar), Sascha Vögele (drums) and Daniel Kucher (keyboards) quickly emerged from the Karlsruhe musician pool. Despite an intensive search, the vocals initially remained unoccupied and so Nachtschatten began as a pure instrumental band in the first few months. Daniel Wengle, who until then only worked as a bass player, stepped in to record the first demos. Through first live appearances and a. At the Sunstorm Festival and the University of Karlsruhe in 2011, as well as further demo recordings, Wengle's position as a singer solidified and the band stopped looking for a singer after his approval.

In 2013 Daniel Kucher left the band as keyboardist and Sonja Helwig took over this position. When Helwig left the band after a short time, the band decided not to fill this position any longer.

2013–2018: Prolog

With the increasing number of concerts and the financial challenges of the upcoming album recording for Prolog , the tensions in the band also increased. The guitarist Manuel Balzer announced his departure before the start of recording. Sascha Dörr took over his position. When Nightshade was confirmed as tour support for Craving in 2014 , Pascal Fitterer stepped in for Sascha Vögele on drums, initially temporarily. During the recording of the Prolog , Vögele announced his final departure, with Fitterer becoming a permanent member. Since the photo shoot for the album booklet was already completed, Sascha Vögele can still be seen here. The recordings were completed by the two remaining founding members, Andreas Siefert and Daniel Wengle, with a long delay and high financial outlay. After Sascha Dörr left, Tony Kostanjšek temporarily stepped in for his position in 2015. Deiser can also be seen in the video clip for lightning strike . In the same year Matthias eing finally took over the position on guitar. After the debut album Prolog was finally released in 2015 on the Sonic Revolution label, the band concentrated on live performances in the following years. Among other things, they could be seen at the Sunstorm Festival 2015 with Leaves' Eyes , the Aargh Festival 2016 with Debauchery and the Open Hair Festival 2017 with Crowbar in Liechtenstein. Due to Matthias eing's stay abroad, Dennis Blaser initially temporarily took over his position on guitar from 2016 and later joined the band as a member.

2018–2020: beacon

After Matthias Ing returned, the band began performing with three guitarists. The reason for this was the work on the songs for the EP Leuchtfeuer , in which a large part of the former keyboard tracks were replaced by the third guitar. The songs from the debut album Prolog have also been rearranged for three guitars, replacing large parts of the keyboard. While the stage outfit has always been kept in plain black, Nightshade appeared for the first time in a clear stage outfit and a controlled stage show at the southern German Gothic meeting in 2018. In the same year they also played together with Sepultura at the Metal Acker Open Air. After the studio recordings in 2019, they released their new EP on March 6, 2020 with the name Leuchtfeuer . Even if the release concert in the city center of Karlsruhe was held with a reduced audience, all subsequent concerts on the release tour had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The EP Leuchtfeuer entered the “Official Rock and Metal Charts” in April 2020 with position 27.

Trivia

Band name

The band is known for always inventing different stories for recurring questions in interviews. So there are different statements about the origin of the band name:

“We met online. It was actually a swinger site, but because we can't really share well in real life, we decided to start a band. And as it is, you look for a name and then ... night ... chat ... chat at night ... nightshade ... "

- Matthias input

German texts

Initially, the band was rejected by many labels. One reason that was often mentioned was that the German-language texts would make marketing much more difficult.

Why Wengle decided to use German as the text language, he always answered differently in various interviews, in 2020 he said in an interview with Nightshade Magazine:

“The harshness of the language actually suits Death Metal perfectly and since it's my mother tongue, I can do what I want with it. Of course you have a certain obligation, so just stringing a few good-sounding words together is unfortunately not. "

- Daniel Wengle
