Nah & Frisch is an umbrella brand founded in 1983 under which around 500 independent Austrian retail salespeople from the food industry have come together. The group emerges from the former brands A&O, IFA and ff and is particularly well represented in rural areas.

Under the Nah & Frisch brand, independent merchants work together with four wholesalers who provide IT infrastructure, central purchasing and other services. These four wholesalers are in turn part of the Markant Österreich GmbH purchasing group .

In 2016, Nah & Frisch generated sales of 300 million euros at almost 500 locations in Austria. The average turnover per location was put at 603,000.00 euros. Compared to 2015, sales increased by 1.5 percent. The total sales area is around 100,000 m², the average Nah & Frisch market has a sales area of ​​200 m². In 2016, Nah & Frisch employed around 2000 people. Freshly baked goods are baked in 358 locations, 268 merchants have a coffee corner, 213 markets are a lottery / tote collection point and 176 Nah & Frisch act as postal partners.

Another distribution channel besides the classic Nah & Frisch business is Nah & Frisch Punkt . Intended for urban areas, tourist centers and highly frequented locations, up to 1200 items are offered on a maximum sales area of ​​100 m². The combination with a petrol station and other services, such as a snack concept or lottery / pools, is individually possible. Nah & Frischpunkt stops in 2016 at 20 locations supplied by the wholesalers Kastner and Kiennast. Wholesaler Pfeiffer pursues a similar concept with the local suppliers called Land Leben auf .

Markant Austria GmbH

The predecessor organization ZEV Markant was created in 1969 through the merger of A&O and IFA , from 1983 ff was also integrated, since then the umbrella brand Nah & Frisch has also been served by Markant. Since 2009 operates under the name Markant Austria GmbH, the abbreviation Z connotations of core E inkaufs- and V was ertriebsgesellschaft deleted.

Markant's areas of responsibility are service (vehicle fleet, regulation), purchasing (trade and own brands, supplier discussions) and marketing (Nah & Frisch, C&C). The group is divided into shareholders, members and cooperation partners.

Until 2010 the following picture emerged: The main shareholder with 60% was Markant AG (Switzerland), 8% signed Mr. Wichtl, each 4% owned by the wholesalers Wedl, Pfeiffer, Kiennast, the companies Hausmann, Weiß, dm-drogerie markt and Eurogast as well as 2% each by the wholesalers Kastner and Brückler. In 2010 Markant AG increased its shares to 100 percent and has been the sole owner ever since.

The around 30 members of the purchasing community are made up of Markant AG, the four wholesalers and their sales channels (Nah & Frisch, Nah & Frischpunkt, Unimarkt, etc.), RWA Raiffeisen Ware Austria (warehouse), dm-drogerie markt and a few other companies.
