The Napoleon House , also known as the Nicholas Girod House and Mayor Girod House , is a historically significant building in the French Quarter in New Orleans , Louisiana .
history
The then Mayor of New Orleans, Nicholas Girod, built the three-story building in 1814 after inheriting the property from his brother François Claude Girod in April of the same year. The building adjoins a two-story house that the late brother built in 1794. The name Napoleon House goes back to a local tradition, according to which Girod was the leading head of a conspiracy to liberate Napoleon Bonaparte from 1814 . The plan was to bring Bonaparte to New Orleans, with the Napoleon House as his residence. Three days before the conspiracy was to be carried out, news of Napoleon's death reached New Orleans on St. Helena . In 1920 Joseph Impastato bought the house, in which he ran a grocery store from 1914, and set up a pub in an adjoining room, which still exists today.
In his 1957 novel Hornblower in the West Indies, Cecil Scott Forester took up the conspiracy that gave Napoleon House its name.
On October 15, 1966, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a Contributing Property of the Vieux Carré Historic District . Since April 15, 1970, the Napoleon House has the status of a National Historic Landmark and is listed as Mayor Girod House. It is named Nicholas Girod House in the NRHP's database, which was included on the same day.
Napoleon House was a filming location for the film JFK - Tatort Dallas by Oliver Stone . In the scene in question , Jim Garrison, portrayed by Kevin Costner, is watching television coverage of the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy in the bar , which he learned about a few minutes earlier.
Building description
The walls of the three-story building are plastered with stucco . The hipped roof has five dormers with semicircular gables , four of which look onto Chartres Street and one onto St. Louis Street. An octagonal dome sits enthroned on the roof . The classical design, freed from decorative elements such as pillars and columns, is reminiscent of the Louis-seize style . The floors as well as the windows of the first and second floors as well as the cornice are accentuated by flat, straight relief bands that run around them. A band runs vertically along the slightly rounded corner of the house. The first floor has two balconies at the front with low, wrought-iron railings. From the courtyard, which is bordered at the rear by the two-story building core from 1794, the original spiral staircase leads through all three floors.
The Napoleon House has seen few structural changes over its history and is an excellent example of a French colonial style townhouse .
