Natasja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Natasja (also known as Little T and Little Tasja ; real name: Natasja Saad ; born October 31, 1974 in Copenhagen ; † June 24, 2007 in Spanish Town , Saint Catherine Parish , Jamaica ) was a Danish - Sudanese reggae -, dancehall - and hip-hop musician.

life and career

She is the daughter of the Danish photographer Kirstine Saad and a Sudanese father. She grew up in the Islands Brygge district of Copenhagen . At the age of 13 Natasja started singing and working as a DJ in Copenhagen, where she performed with Miss Mukupa , Kruzh'em and McEmzee in the band No Name Requested and made her regional breakthrough in 1990.

In the following time she played with her band No Name Requested with greats such as Queen Latifah , A Tribe Called Quest or Massive Attack at concerts and became famous in Jamaica. Since there was still no commercial success, she turned to riding as her other passion and began training as a jockey . After a serious riding accident in 1998, she was forced to quit her education and devote herself entirely to music.

In the summer of 2004 she first released the 12 " album Cover Me , and later the 7" Summercute . In 2005, her first English-language album was released on CD release , which was published among others in Germany and Russia. In the same year she worked under the pseudonym Lille T on Bikstok Røgsystems hit Cigar and released the single Time 2 Fly on the German reggae label Germaicans , which also went into the Riddim Rodeo .

In 2006 she won the reggae competition Irie FM Big Break Contest in Jamaica with the song 45 Questions . She was the first non-Jamaican woman to win this competition. In addition to a record deal, a music video and a photo session, the winning prize included participation in the Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest , where she performed with the likes of Beenie Man , 50 Cent and Rihanna . In the same year she appeared at numerous music events such as the Sting Festival in Jamaica, the Popkomm Reggae Festival in Berlin and the Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden as well as in Denmark at the SPOT Festival and the Roskilde Festival .

She wrote her lyrics in both Danish and English , the latter mostly in Jamaican patois .

She was actively involved in Ungdomshuset and Christiania .

Natasja died on June 24, 2007 in a car accident in Jamaica . Two other people were seriously injured, while Natasja's friend Karen Mukupa survived the accident relatively unharmed. After her successes in Jamaica in particular, an international breakthrough was in sight, which is why her death, not least because of her exceptionally committed personality, was widely received as a painful loss for the Danish music scene.

Natasja's grave is in the Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen. After her death, on her 33rd birthday, a central path (in front of "Den Grå Hal") was named "Natasjas Gade" in her honor in the free town of Christiania .

Posthumous publications

Her album I Danmark er jeg født , recorded during her lifetime and released posthumously in 2007, was received positively by the public and received consistently good reviews in the media.

In autumn 2008 the English-language album Shooting Star was released , which she had recorded parallel to I Danmark er jeg født . The song Calabria in particular gained popularity in British discos .
