Nathan Smith (born January 8, 1770 in Woodbury , Connecticut Colony , †  December 6, 1835 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Whig Party ) who represented the state of Connecticut in the US Senate .

Life

As a teenager, Nathan Smith received a decent education. He studied law and was inducted into the bar in 1792, after which he moved to New Haven to practice law. In 1817 he was appointed prosecuting attorney for New Haven County , which he remained until 1835.

In 1818 he took his first political office as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention for the state of Connecticut. In 1825 he stood as a candidate of the National Republicans against the incumbent Governor Oliver Wolcott Jr. , but was defeated by this. From 1828 to 1829, Smith served as the state attorney for the Connecticut District.

In 1832, Nathan Smith was a successful candidate for the United States Senate. He took up his mandate in Washington on March 4, 1833, but died during his tenure on December 6, 1835. Smith was buried in New Haven, where he lived.

His older brother Nathaniel represented Connecticut in the US House of Representatives from 1795 to 1799 . His nephew Truman Smith was a member of the US Senate from 1849 to 1854.
