Nathaniel Harry "Nat" Phillips (born March 21, 1997 in Bolton ) is an English football player who is under contract with Liverpool FC .

Career

Phillips left the Bolton Wanderers youth team in 2016 and kept fit for the time being at Huddersfield Town after securing a scholarship to the University of North Carolina with the prospect of an MLS SuperDraft . Shortly before his planned departure for North America, however, he signed a contract with Liverpool FC and decided to stay at home. In preparation for the 2018/19 Premier League , Phillips trained under Jürgen Klopp for the first time with Liverpool's first team and was number 47 in the professional squad.Although he only made competitive appearances with the reserve team, he celebrated as a member of the extended squad with Liverpool FC Triumph in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League final in Madrid .

On August 7, 2019, Phillips moved to VfB Stuttgart on loan until the end of the season . He then made his professional debut on August 12, 2019 in the DFB Cup 2019/20 in the first round in the 1-0 away win against third division Hansa Rostock with VfB when he came on for Holger Badstuber at half time . The following weekend, Phillips made his debut in the league on the 3rd match day of the 2019/20 second division season in a 2-1 home win against FC St. Pauli . The Englishman made eleven competitive appearances for the Swabians and finished the first half of the season with them in third place in the table.

On January 1, 2020, the loan deal on the part of Phillips' club Liverpool FC was prematurely terminated due to the "tense personnel situation". Since the Premier League was not interrupted by a continuous winter break like the German Bundesliga, a return to Stuttgart for the second division start at the end of January 2020 was possible. In the 1-0 win over city rivals Everton in the 3rd round of the FA Cup , the defender made his debut for Liverpool's first team and returned to Stuttgart on loan before the start of the second half . In the central defense he was still placed in England, but was ousted by Marcin Kamiński in the back four from the end of May . In total, Phillips played 22 competitive games for the Swabians and rose with them as runner-up in the Bundesliga .
