Natica is a genus of moon snails (Naticidae). It wasfirst scientifically described and introducedby Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1777.

Appearance

The species of the genus Natica have a mostly medium-sized, spherical housing with a few, rapidly increasing whorls. The thread is usually not particularly high. The surface of the case is usually smooth and not sculpted, but often has a typical coloring or drawing that is used to identify the different species. The housing can be closed by a lime operculum to protect the animal from predators.

Way of life

Most of the species in this genus are typical soft-ground inhabitants. With their swellable foot they plow through the sandy soil for other mollusks . Thanks to their specially shaped radula , they are able to pierce the shells of sea snails and mussels and suck out the soft tissues.

Systematics

The genus Natica was the first described genus from the family of the Naticidae. For this reason, it used to include numerous species, of which it was only gradually recognized that they belonged to other genera. Some groups such as Naticarius , Tectonatica or Glyphepithema are listed by different authors either as sub-genera of Natica or as separate genera.
