The National Physical Laboratory ( NPL ; German Nationales Physikalisches Laboratorium ) in Teddington , Middlesex is the British counterpart to the German Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). It defines the national standards (norms) applicable in the field of physics and technology .

Your tasks are the determination of fundamental and natural constants , representation , maintenance and dissemination of the legal units of the International System of Units (SI), supplemented by services such as the calibration service UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) for the legally regulated area.

The first director was Richard Glazebrook from 1899 to 1919 .
