The National Theater and Opera House ( Romanian : Teatrul Național și Opera Română ) on Piața Victoriei in the western Romanian city ​​of Timișoara houses the Teatrul Național " Mihai Eminescu " and the Opera Națională Română din Timișoara . It has 711 seats and is a symbol of the city. In the right wing of the building the German State Theater Timişoara and the Hungarian State Theater “ Csiky Gergely ” are housed in a theater hall with 100 seats.

Architecture and history

The building was built between 1871 and 1875 by the architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner the Younger as a culture palace in the Renaissance style on 1,600 oak pillars under the name Ferenc József szinház , Hungarian for Franz Joseph Theater . Two fires damaged the building; the first broke out in 1880, but the theater was restored to its original form by 1882. After the second fire on October 30, 1920, only the side wings remained. The theater was rebuilt several times largely according to the old plans and finally re-inaugurated on May 13, 1928.

In the years 1934 to 1936, the new construction of the Great Hall and the construction of today's main facade in the style of a triumphal arch , with the windows facing the Piața Victoriei being closed. The hall and facade were made by the Romanian architect Duiliu Marcu , who was considered an admirer of the Mussolini state architect Marcello Piacentini , in the neo-Byzantine style with neo-Romanesque influences and cost 2,660,023 lei . The closed windows were not exposed again until 2003.

The Timișoara State Opera was founded on March 30, 1946 and officially opened on April 27, 1947. The opera singer Aca de Barbu was appointed the first director .

During the Romanian Revolution of 1989 , the square in front of the National Theater and Opera House was one of the main locations, and the revolutionaries gave their speeches from the balcony of the building.
