history

The founding initiators were citizens of the city who pursued the questions of nature research in similar societies that had already existed. On November 7, 1843, the Royal Hanoverian Ministry of the Interior granted her the right of a legal person. The NfG is an old law company ; Since the introduction of the BGB, the company has been treated according to association law.

Since its foundation, the association has been committed to science and the further development and application of new technologies. Extensive collections were brought together and a North Sea Museum, which no longer exists today, was set up. The work of the society found general recognition in cultural life and in science.

During the Second World War , the building and large parts of the collections were destroyed in a bombing raid on December 11, 1943. It was not until the mid-1980s that the new building was erected on the site of the former North Sea Museum.
