The Niebüll Natural History Museum, which opened in 1980, is located in the small town of the same name in the far north-west of Schleswig-Holstein . According to the guiding principle of its sponsoring association, it sees itself as a “cross-border German- Danish hands-on museum for the presentation of regional nature on both sides of the border”.

building

The museum has been based in the building at Hauptstrasse 108 since it opened. It is a two-storey brick building with a slate- covered gable roof and a gabled central projection . The facade is structured by pilaster strips and friezes . The house was built in 1898 to designs by the local architect and builder Heinrich Schmicker. Among other things, he was responsible for the tower of the St. Gallus Church in Neugalmsbüll and the Niebüller train station . In later years he was the last honorary community leader in Niebüll.

Initially the building was the Central Hotel . After the referendums in Schleswig in February and March 1920 regarding the German-Danish border , the district office of the new district of Südtondern was set up there. From 1960 the house was used commercially.

Under the object number 35363 it is under monument protection as a structural facility from the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The museum

history

The basis of the museum's holdings is the extensive private collection of the trained taxidermist Kurt Bachmann (1902–1987), who had been running a nursery in Niebüll since 1949. This collection contained minerals , fossils and self-made animal preparations . In order to preserve them in the city, the Naturkundliches Heimatmuseum Niebüll e. V. , to whom Bachmann left the objects. The association members volunteered to organize an exhibition with showcases and dioramas on the first floor of the building at Hauptstrasse 108. At that time, there was still a Danish shoe factory on the ground floor. On August 30, 1980, the Niebüll Natural History Museum was officially opened.

After the decision to expand was made in 1987, the museum closed for almost four years from 1989. It was completely renovated and extended to the ground floor. Large dioramas, eight aquariums and an adventure room for children were added as new exhibition elements . In June 1993 the reopening of the house, which has since been known as the Naturkundemuseum Niebüll, was celebrated.

During the winter break of 2003/2004, the previous aquariums were replaced by three larger ones; the renovation costs amounted to 22,000 euros. Nine years later, at the turn of the year 2012/13, a new, modern permanent exhibition was set up. Due to a cooperation agreement concluded on May 24, 2017 with the administration of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park , the museum is a so-called national park partner. It thus functions as an information station for the national park.

Exhibition and educational offerings

The museum's permanent exhibition is primarily concerned with the regional flora and fauna of Northern Germany, in particular with the landscapes on both sides of the German- Danish border - with the forests , the moors , the Wadden Sea and the heather areas of the Geest . Exhibits to be highlighted are, for example, three freshwater aquariums with a capacity of up to 1500 liters and a live bee colony that can be observed behind glass . All accompanying texts are written in both German and Danish . An info café and a children's action area complete the exhibition.

As an extracurricular learning location , the museum has an important position in the North Friesland district . It offers a creative workshop and holiday programs, and schools can hold project days there. The bee colony is transportable and can be presented and explained as a “mobile museum” as part of one-off appointments or longer projects in primary schools and kindergartens. The museum is also active in natural history geragogy . For example, special interactive courses are offered for people with mild to moderate dementia . In addition, visits by museum employees to retirement homes can be booked, whereby a selection of exhibits is carried in a suitcase. Using preparations, feathers , furs , animal sounds and the like, in particular the sensory perception should be addressed and stimulated. These campaigns are carried out in cooperation with the German Alzheimer's Society . Other educational offerings include children's birthday parties, lectures on nature and environmental topics, and outdoor tours through the natural areas in the German-Danish border area.
