history

At a residents 'meeting in Langenbach in 1955, it was decided to establish the nature theater in order to meet the citizens' requests for consideration of the cultural concerns of the forest villages.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the nature theater took place on June 23, 1955. The first earthworks began on July 24, 1955. The construction was done in volunteer work in the National Reconstruction Agency (NAW).

The inauguration of the natural stage took place on June 30, 1957. Many ensembles performed at the inauguration ceremony in the afternoon, including the Eisfeld folk dance group, the Lauscha yodel group, the Suhl State Symphony Orchestra based in Hildburghausen and the Viernau folk choir.

The first performance took place on July 10, 1957 by the Meiningen Theater with the play "Die Räuber" by Friedrich Schiller (directed by Fritz Bennewitz). The opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber was performed at the beginning of August . In the first season of 1957, around 16,000 visitors were counted at 18 performances. In the following year 1958 around 52,000 visitors were counted at 32 performances. The following season, 1959, was the most successful of the natural stage with 84,678 visitors and 40 performances.

For 35 seasons, from 1957 to 1991, the Meininger Theater regularly played on the natural stage. The more than 1200 performances during this time as well as some brass music festivals and a few other events such as rock concerts were attended by a total of almost 1.9 million people.

Since 1993 the theater has been operated by Naturtheater Steinbach-Langenbach Betriebs GmbH (managing director Dieter Semmelmann), which was founded that year . Around 40,000 visitors are counted annually.
