A secondary job is a gainful activity that is carried out in addition to a predominantly full-time job, studying or a predominant activity in the household and family . A secondary job is generally only accepted if the time required for it is less than a third of the main working time. Section 138 (3) SGB III, according to which unemployment benefits will continue to be granted in the event of unemployment if the amount of time spent on part-time work is less than 15 hours per week, can be used as a guide . Average contact persons sideline a company operate per week 13 hours for their self-employment on.

The sideline is conceivable for all types of income :

At 59 percent, starting a self-employed part-time job is the most common type of business start-up in Germany (full-time employment 41 percent). The advantages of a "part-time business" are:

  • It is an opportunity to test the step into self-employment without first giving up the security of a permanent job
  • As a rule, part-time start-ups require little start-up capital and no employees

In Germany in 2003, almost one million people took the step into self-employment via part-time business, and a third of these part-time start-ups plan to expand self-employment to full-time business in the future.
