Neil A. Campbell

Neil Allison Campbell (born April 17, 1946 in Culver City , † October 21, 2004 in Redlands ) was an American biologist and professor of botany at the University of California ( Riverside ).

Life

After attending Gardena High School in 1963, Campbell completed a biology degree, which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1967 from California State University, Long Beach . He received his Masters in Zoology from the University of California at Los Angeles. He then received his PhD in plant biology in the discipline of botany from the University of California at Riverside in 1975 . Campbell did research on plants in arid areas and on coasts. He was interested in the tolerance of these plants to salinity , pH and other factors. Another focus of his research was the study of the cellular basis of leaf movements. Campbell has taught at the University of California, Riverside , Cornell University , Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College .

Campbell taught for more than 30 years. He was particularly committed to improving basic studies. At Cornell University, for example, he gave the undergraduate course a new structure.
His research results have been published in numerous journals such as Science or Plant Physiology . With his introductory works on biology, such as Biology: Concepts and Connections , Essential Biology and Essential Biology with Physiology , he addressed students in the relevant fields in particular and supplemented them with modern media projects. The published work he biology was first published in 1987 and is now sold in the 11th edition. Today the book is edited by Benjamin Cummings and co-author Jane Reece .

Campbell died of a heart attack.

  • Campbell was awarded the Outstanding Professor Award for "Excellence in Teaching" by San Bardino College in 1986 .
  • The University of California, Riverside presented him with the Dinstinguished Alumnus Award in 2001 .
