Nelleke Vedelaar (* 1977 in Assen ) is a Dutch politician from the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). She has held the office of party leader since October 2017 .

biography

Before entering politics, Vedelaar worked as a program manager at the Netherlands Institute for City Innovations Studies in The Hague . She began her political career in 2010 as a member of the city ​​council of Zwolle , where she was primarily responsible for the areas of care, housing and social affairs. She was also chairwoman of the Association for Housing, Public Welfare and Care and chairwoman of the board of directors of the Concilium housing association . On October 6, 2017, Vedelaar was elected the new party chairman of the PvdA with 62.5% of the votes, and then gave up her previous position as city councilor. She succeeded Hans Spekman , who announced his resignation after the defeat of the PvdA in the elections for the Second Chamber of the States General in March 2017. Programmatically, she advocated radical changes in the PvdA in response to the last election result. In particular, a rejuvenation of the party cadre and a return to more closeness to the people are necessary in order to achieve better results in the future.
