NeoOffice (formerly NeoOffice / J) is an office package for macOS that is based on LibreOffice from version 2017 . It was initially founded as a project with the aim of porting the OpenOffice.org office package natively to macOS without the X11 XQuartz environment . This gave the program the appearance and properties of a native macOS program, which enables the user to operate familiar with other software and thus simplifies handling. The program can also make use of the capabilities of the operating system (e.g. print dialog, font display). NeoOffice is available on the Mac App Store .

NeoOffice

Some routines for integration into the Aqua user interface, which are of little importance for speed, are programmed in Java . After the Cocoa project was discontinued, the “/ J” distinction was dispensed with in version 1.2. It supports 57 languages, twelve of which are built into the standard installation. The help files are in English, but can be installed for twelve other languages, including German, with a separate installation package.

NeoOffice was originally developed by Planamesa Software under the LGPL and SISSL licenses to port the Solaris / Linux version from OpenOffice.org to Mac OS X so that it is ultimately available with the Aqua interface. Today the software is released under the GPL license, which the LGPL enables. It ensures "that everyone who makes improvements to NeoOffice makes them available to the general public" and that the software continues to be free of charge. Apart from the free source code , only older program versions of NeoOffice were really free . The current program version can only be downloaded for a fee, but may be passed on free of charge; older versions are no longer offered (free of charge).

Derived projects

RetroOffice
RetroOffice is a by-product of NeoOffice using X11 . It was intended as an improved version of OpenOffice.org/X11. The development was stopped.
NeoOffice / C
NeoOffice version that the Cocoa - programming interface used. It was not advanced and had not been developed any further.
NeoOffice Mobile
NeoOffice version for iOS and Android , which was first released in 2010. She was reinstated on October 31, 2013.

aims

NeoOffice was initially just a feasibility study to gain experience in porting a native Mac OS X version of OpenOffice.org. With NeoOffice 1.2 Alpha, however, the program package established itself as an independent project, which is organizationally developed independently of OpenOffice.org, but has the same code base (with the exception of the "native" parts, especially the user interface) .

Versions

NeoOffice is developed under the terms of the GNU General Public License , which specifically requires the disclosure of the source code . Thus, the source code can be downloaded for free, changed as desired and compiled . However, the developers state that working on NeoOffice consumes a lot of resources such as time and money. Therefore the precompiled installation packages from NeoOffice are not free. The NeoOffice project, which is not supported by OpenOffice, LibreOffice or any other company, is financed solely through the sale of the finished installation packages to their users.

  • Source code for self-compilation: free
  • NeoOffice Viewer (cannot save documents): free
  • NeoOffice Classic Edition: fee-based (as of January 2017: 15 euros)
  • NeoOffice from the Mac App Store: chargeable, all future updates free (as of June 2017: 32.99 euros)

Up to version 3.4, older versions were still offered free of charge. Currently (as of January 2017), only the current versions are offered for a fee on the official website.
