The Nephelometric Turbidity Unit ( nephelometric turbidity value ; NTU) is in the water treatment used unit for the turbidity of liquids . It is the unit of the turbidity of a liquid measured with a calibrated nephelometer .

More units

The unit NTU is more common in the US . The limit value for the turbidity of drinking water there and in the Federal Republic of Germany is 1 NTU. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the unit TE / F (turbidity unit / formazin) is common (the unit NTU is used in the 2001 Drinking Water Ordinance).

The international turbidity standard is the chemical formazin , which forms particles of different sizes in water. Units derived from this are:

  • In brewing :
    • ASBC (American Society of Brewing Chemists)
    • EBC (European Brewery Convention)
  • In water treatment ( ISO 7027)
    • FAU ( Formazine Attenuation Units )
    • FNU (Formazine Nephelometric Units)
    • FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit)
    • NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit)
    • TE / F (turbidity unit / formazin)
