Nessun dorma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nessun dorma ( Italian for 'Nobody sleeps') is the aria of Prince Kalaf at the beginning of the third act of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot , which was premiered in Milan in 1926.

In the opera, the action of which is set in the Chinese Empire 3000 years ago, the strange prince Kalaf solves the riddle of Princess Turandot and wins her as a wife. However, he promises the princess to release her from her promise of marriage if she finds out his name by sunrise.

Turandot then orders that no one should sleep in Beijing, everyone should search for the name of the unknown prince. The subjects are threatened with the death penalty if they fail to find out the name.

Messenger proclaim: Questa notte nessun dorma in Pechino - 'Nobody should sleep this night in Beijing'. The choir then repeats the words Nessun dorma . Kalaf also takes up these words at the beginning of the aria and shows himself steadfast and certain that the princess will not solve the mystery of his name.

Italian original

Calaf
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principessa,
nella tua fredda stanza
guardi le stelle che tremano
d'amore e di speranza!
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò,
quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
che ti fa mia!

Chorus
Il nome suo nessun saprà ...
E noi dovrem, ahimè !, morir, morir! ...

Calaf
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, ask!
Tramontate, ask! All'alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!

German translation

Calaf
Nobody sleeps! Nobody sleeps!
You too, princess, see the stars
in your cold room
, they tremble
with love and hope!
But my secret is locked inside me,
nobody will find out my name!
No, no, on your mouth I'll call him
when the light shines!
And my kiss will end the silence
by which I win you!

Chorus
Nobody will know his name ...
And we have to die, die! ...

Calaf
Get out of here, oh night! Go down, stars!
Go down, stars! At sunrise I will win!
I will win! I will win!

German sung text

Calaf
Nobody sleep! Nobody sleeps!
You too, princess, do not sleep,
in your cold rooms
you look at the stars that flicker
dream of love and hope!
But my secret keeps my mouth,
I don't tell anyone the name!
No, no, I'll say it on your lips
as soon as the sun will shine!
My kiss alone should break this silence that
makes you mine!

Chorus
If nobody knows his name,
then we must suffer death!

Calaf Let
the night escape, every star turn pale!
Let every star pale so that the day may arise
and with it my victory!

Since the opera's premiere on April 25, 1926 by Arturo Toscanini at La Scala in Milan , the aria has been part of the standard repertoire of all great tenors. The calaf of the premiere was the Spanish tenor Miguel Fleta . The lyrical tenor Fritz Wunderlich sang the aria in 1958 under the German title Keiner Schlafe .

Luciano Pavarotti achieved great popularity beyond the operatic stage with Puccini's aria. It became the climax of many of his concerts and led to an identification of the singer with this work.

The aria Nessun dorma was also part of the program of the Three Tenors on the occasion of the 1990 Soccer World Cup , which reached a worldwide audience of one billion. The recording of this concert is considered the most successful classic DVD of all time.

The until then largely unknown British tenor Paul Potts won the casting show Britain's Got Talent in 2007 with a version of Nessun dorma , which also hit the singles charts. The adoption of this inclusion in a Deutsche Telekom commercial led to further popularization.

In 2012, nine-year-old Amira Willighagen sang the aria on the TV show Holland's Got Talent .
