The Nestelberg is a 402  m high mountain in the Dahner Felsenland , part of the Wasgau . This is formed by the southern part of the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate and the northern part of the Vosges in the departments of Bas-Rhin and Moselle .

geography

Nestelberg is located south of Berwartstein Castle and to the left of Erlenbachstal . The northern part of the mountain, including the summit, lies within the boundaries of the local community Erlenbach bei Dahn in the district of Südwestpfalz . The southern part belongs to the district of Niederschlettenbach . To the south of the mountain, the 370 m high Geiersnest mountain joins, the Bubenfelsen located on a western foothill. The mountain is completely forested; it can be climbed on a sometimes very steep hiking trail that begins in the Erlenbachtal, which is around 200 m below.

history

Vorwerk Klein-France on the northern slope of the Nestelberg

In the late Middle Ages, the Vorwerk Klein-France gained importance , which was built in 1484 by the lord of the Berwartstein castle, Marshal Hans von Trotha , as a hillside castle at 322  m above sea level on the northern slope of Nestelberg. Only 370 m as the crow flies from the main castle, the fortification contributed to the “corpse field” from the north (Berwartstein) and south (Little France) being under fire from two sides . The mountain saddle with the significant name was the only place where the siege cannons of the time could be set up close enough to the Berwartstein.
