The campus newspaper neue universal (nu) is a student newspaper that appears two to three times per semester at the University of Trier . The circulation is 5000 pieces with a scope of 12 to 20 pages in tabloid format. The new universal is the only independent student newspaper in Trier. It is distributed free of charge at the university and technical college and is available at central meeting points such as pubs and cultural institutions.

History and structure

The newspaper was founded in 1978 under the name Universal . When it was founded at the end of 1994, it was given its current name. Back then as the publication organ of the General Student Committee , the editorial staff has distanced itself further and further from it through critical reporting. Since autumn 1996, the newspaper has been formally and financially independent of student institutions and university management. Today the new universal is financed exclusively through advertising. The publisher is the non-profit association Trierer Campus Medien e. V. In addition to the print edition, some authors design the website nuweb.de. This is also financed by the sponsoring association and represents a supplement to the journalistic offer.

The editorial team consists of students from all departments. There are currently around ten editors who take care of defining the topics and planning the pages. In addition, every student can write articles as a freelancer. In contrast to other student newspapers, the new universal does not have an editor-in-chief, but “only” one chief on duty (CvD). This post is filled by a different editor for each issue. The head of duty is responsible for the planning and coordination of the respective issue ( ViSdP ) and designs the front page.

Due to a lack of young talent and increased competition from a new online campus newspaper and a campus radio, the last edition of the newspaper appeared in June 2010; the last post on the website is from November 2010. As the new universal reported on the front page of one of the last issues, this development was foreseeable - also due to the introduction of the Bachelor and Master courses.

After a three-year break, a new edition was published in January 2014. The new start succeeded with the support of the Young Journalists Rhineland-Palatinate Association .

content

The new universal reported not only - but also - on university policy issues and what was happening on the university campus. Articles about current events in the Trier region as well as reports, features and service topics for students were also published. Further categories were media, culture, cinema / literature, travel and music (flat nuggets) as well as a satire page - the “closed one”.

Explosive and controversial topics were also taken up several times. For example, the new universal reported on an expensive but impractical revolving door to the cafeteria, which the ZDF magazine Ländersache then sent a report about .

Particular attention was paid to an article exposing Deutsche Bank's improper conduct in dealing with Chinese students. Spiegel Online later reported on this case.

The newspaper also had numerous interview partners such as the historian Götz Aly , the journalist Hans Leyendecker , the writer Robert Gernhardt and the lawyer of Murat Kurnaz , Bernhard Docke . Numerous local, regional, state and federal politicians such as Klaus Jensen , Ulrich Holkenbrink, Bernhard Kaster , Juergen Zoellner , Klaus Toepfer or Karl Diller , who were new universal questions.

(Former) editors of the new universal work (et) s in the editorial offices of various daily newspapers such as Handelsblatt , Financial Times Deutschland , Lausitzer Rundschau , 20cent , BILD , Landeszeitung für die Lüneburger Heide , Trierischer Volksfreund or Märkische Oderzeitung , for magazines such as Bunte , Insight and Journalist , for Deutschlandradio Kultur and for TV stations such as NDR , ZDF and ARTE . You work as PR journalists at various chambers, such as the German Chamber of Commerce Abroad in Kiev and the Brandenburg Chamber of Physicians and Dentists in Cottbus, as well as freelance journalists and for media groups such as News Corporation or dapd .

Award

In 2006, the new universal was recognized as the best German-language student newspaper by the Pro Campus-Presse initiative with the MLP Campus-Presse Award. Above all, the jury praised the journalistic diversity, the clear structure and reader guidance and high utility value. Characteristic for the newspaper is the "critical reporting towards the university and the city of Trier" as well as a "certain cheek" in the research. Juror Christoph Keese, editor-in-chief of “Welt am Sonntag”, praised the thematic range, which “went well beyond the university's box”.

The award goes back to an initiative of the financial services provider MLP and the Rommerskirchen publishing house. The jury consists of numerous (chief) editors from national media such as Welt am Sonntag , Zeit Campus , Uni Spiegel , Financial Times Deutschland , brand eins and the specialist magazine Insight .
