Neuendorf im Sande (officially Neuendorf until 1932 ) is a district of the Steinhöfel community in the Oder-Spree district in the state of Brandenburg .

Geographical location

The district is west of the community center; north of the further district of Buchholz . This is followed in a clockwise direction by the Berkenbrück district and the town of Fürstenwalde / Spree . The northern part is mainly used for agriculture, the southern part is forested. The district is drained by numerous ditches, including the Charlottenhofer Graben, the Margaretenhofer Graben and the Neuendorfer Hauptgraben, which eventually leads into the Spree . The former Fürstenwalde airfield is located on part of the district .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1285 as Nuwendorf ; 1354 as Niendorff and Neuendorp and in 1711 for the first time as Neuendorf im Sande. The name is said to indicate its location on a channel made of alluvial sand , which was created during the last ice age when the glaciers melted in this terminal moraine area . However, the area was settled much earlier. During an excavation in 1930 , archaeologists discovered a spherical amphora that could be dated to the Stone Age . There was also a flat burial ground from around 500 BC. Chr. In the second half of the 13th century, the residents erected a stone church . In the Thirty Years' War the village fell almost desolate . In the period around 1870/1880 was the church the sacred building in Rundbogenstil over form. At the time of National Socialism , the teacher Clara Grunwald prepared around 200 Jewish children in the Neuendorf Landwerk , a training facility of the Hachschara , for emigration to Palestine . Some of the last 60 young people and 30 adults came to Auschwitz together with her . A memorial plaque on the manor house has been commemorating Grunwald since 1988.

On October 26, 2003, the former community of Neuendorf im Sande was incorporated into Steinhöfel . The municipality then filed a municipal constitutional complaint, but this was rejected.
