history

New house of Our Lady around 1960, shortly after the reconstruction

The Old Mother of God House, which dates back to a chapel mentioned as early as 1420, became too small for the many pilgrims at the end of the 19th century , because it only offers space for around 30 people. In addition, the state of construction left a lot to be desired, so the decision was made to build a new and significantly larger church right next to the old chapel. The New Little Mother of God House was built in 1895 and inaugurated on October 13, 1895.

The New House of Our Lady was badly damaged during World War II . The roof and the vaults collapsed, leaving only the walls. The reconstruction took place between 1951 and 1954. Instead of the vaults a flat ceiling was put in, the outside was plastered, decorative elements were chipped off.

Both the old and the new mother's worship house originally belonged to the parish of St. Anna . Since 1952, both chapels had been in the parish of the newly formed parish of St. Josef , but both chapels initially remained in the property of the Annaparre. It was not until 1963 that the chapels became the property of the parish of St. Josef. Since the parish merger of Düren's inner-city parishes in 2010, the new and old Madonna's house belong to the new large parish of St. Lukas.

The outside of the new chapel was renovated in 2008, followed by the redesign of the outdoor area and the construction of the stairs to the Mother of God house. In 2017, the interior was renovated and redesigned according to plans by architect Arno Knott from Düren. These measures were completely financed by donations, the costs amounted to 260,000 euros.

Building description

The New Mother of God House is a single-nave and three-bay hall church , due to the reconstruction in simplified neo-Gothic forms , with a three-sided choir closure, small rectangular vestibule and a rectangular roof turret on a high pitched roof. The interior is spanned by a flat concrete ceiling, the windows are pointed arches, but since the war without tracery . The building measures 17.20 meters in length and 7.60 meters in width.

Interior and equipment

The interior was redesigned in 2017 according to plans by architect Arno Knott. The altar was Bishop of Whit Monday, May 20, 2018 John Bündgens consecrated .

Pilgrimage to the Consolatrix afflictorum

The pilgrimage to the miraculous image of the Consolatrix Afflictorum ( comforter of the afflicted ) takes place from May to October. During this time, the image of grace painted by Adam Siepen is in the New Little Mother of God House. The miraculous image is brought in procession from St. Joseph's Church to the New Mother of God House at the end of April and then again in procession to St. Joseph's Church at the end of October. Here is the image of grace during the winter months.

Even today, both the new and the old Madonna's house are the destination of many believers. In the strongest pilgrimage month of May, up to 5,000 visitors arrive and in the chapel.
