geography

Neufchâteau is located at the confluence of the Meuse and Mouzon rivers .

history

Neufchâteau is one of the oldest in Lorraine. The Roman Noviomagus was a market on the Roman road from Lyon to Trier . Dietrich II , Duke of Lorraine , had a castle built here in the 11th century: the place was named Novum Castrum in 1094 .

Neufchâteau was regularly chosen when it came to settling differences between France and Lorraine. Duchess Christine gathered the Estates General here in 1545 . In 1436, the town was given as a pledge for the ransom with which Duke René I was to be released, and was then occupied by a Burgundian garrison. Cardinal Richelieu had the city walls razed.

With the French Revolution , Neufchâteau (under the name Mouzon-Meuse) became a sub-prefecture of the Vosges.

During the western campaign of the German Wehrmacht in World War II, the Luftwaffe set up a field airfield near Neufchateau in May 1940 .
