Elbe bank with the Ministry of Finance

The Neustädter Elbufer is the designed Elbe bank zone in Dresden between Rosengarten and Marienbrücke . In this area lies the so-called Königsufer , the street on the Elbe side between the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Finance . In a broader sense, the term Königsufer also often stands for the entire Neustadt bank of the Elbe. Opposite it is the Terrassenufer on the old town side of the Elbe. The Neustädter Elbufer lies in the Inner Neustadt , parts of it in the government district .

The supra-regional Elbe cycle path leads along the Neustädter Elbe bank.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, there was no uniform design of the Elbe bank. As early as the second half of the 19th century, the expansion with embankment roads and embankment walls was discussed. In 1910 a competition was held to design the banks of the Neustadt Elbe. This was Hans Erlwein did not win, but his overall plan with a high street bank and monumental buildings was awarded the contract. The plan was not carried out due to Erlwein's death in a car accident in 1914 and the First World War .

Two decades later, shortly after the NSDAP Lord Mayor Ernst Zörner took office , the redesign of the Neustadt bank of the Elbe was decided in 1933 as a comprehensive job creation measure and implemented according to plans by Dresden City Planning Councilor Paul Wolf and Dresden City Garden Director Heinrich Balke , but without the street. The old town bank had an urban character, whereas the northern bank of the Elbe should be landscaped and merge smoothly into the adjoining open landscape. The green spaces above the Marienbrücke and the view to the old town were preserved. Gardens, open stairs, pavilions and sculptures were created along the Neustadt bank of the Elbe. The existing Palaisgarten and gardens of the Hotel Bellevue were included in the design. Between autumn 1933 and 1936, a green corridor including the rose garden with 6,000 rose bushes was built on the bank for about two kilometers. The opening took place on June 5, 1936 by the then Reich Minister of the Interior Wilhelm Frick . Below the Ministry of Finance, the National Socialists created a place for marches and rallies. The “forum for national rallies” had rows of seats, a stone lectern and was flanked by massive substructures for flagpoles. A memorial for the victims of the First World War and a memorial for the “national awakening” were planned next to the head of the Augustus Bridge. Both were never built.

Large parts of the facilities were destroyed in the Second World War. Then the Dresdeners grew vegetables there before the area was reconstructed from the 1950s. From 1947 to 1991 the Königsufer was called Dr.-Rudolf-Friedrichs -Ufer; From 1971–1991 Friedrichs was also the namesake for the second Carolabrücke, which was completed after four years of construction . Since 1991 the film nights have been held annually on the banks of the Elbe in the open space in front of the Ministry of Finance. Beer gardens have settled on the banks of the Elbe, such as the “Augustusgarten” on the Augustus Bridge and the “Elbsegler” between the Blockhaus and Hotel Bellevue.

A competition will take place in 2018/19 for the redesign of the area between the Ministry of Finance and Hotel Bellevue.

Buildings

Carillon pavilion in front of the Japanese Palace

The Neustädter Elbe begins at the Marienbrücke and passes under the Augustus , Carola and Albert bridges .

The Japanese Palace , the Hotel Bellevue , the Blockhaus (the so-called Neustädter Wache ), as well as the buildings of the Ministry of Finance and the State Chancellery are located on the banks of the Neustadt Elbe .

In February 1945, during the air raids on Dresden , a large part of the buildings on the Neustädter Elbe bank were destroyed. Some structures such as the Ministry Buildings and the Japanese Palace were rebuilt. Numerous town houses, including the Körner Museum of the then municipal collections , were demolished and replaced by new buildings such as the Hotel Bellevue . The hotel includes the former home of Christian Leberecht Vogel , and Paul Wolf's Vogelsche garden house was included in the bank design.

Not far from the Japanese Palace, Karl Paul Andrae created a carillon pavilion in 1936. Pfunds Molkerei sold its products out of its windows . The pavilion was destroyed in the air raids in 1945 and rebuilt from 1990 to 1992.

Works of art

Archer

Sculptures, sculptures, reliefs and fountains were set up along the Neustädter Elbe bank in the individual epochs.

One of the most famous sculptures is the "archer" made in 1902 by Ernst Moritz Geyger in the perennial garden on a sandstone plinth about five meters high. There is also a sundial from 1940 and the 1.3 meter high bronze figure “Standing Boy” by Christine Heitmann from 1984 in the perennial garden .

Not far from the perennial garden below the Albertbrücke there are two sandstone reliefs that can be seen from the Elbe. With this direction of view, the left relief depicts historical river life. It was created in 1936/1937 by Hermann Alfred Raddatz . Its height is 1.4 meters, its width 12 meters. It depicts men who are believed to be carrying out ship loading work, as well as a ferryman with his boat. The other relief to the right of the bridge was created by Edmund Moeller in 1938 . Men are shown pulling ships . This relief is 1.4 meters high and 10 meters long.

In the neighboring rose garden, four putti made of shell limestone by Max Hermann Fritz , representing the four seasons, form the entrance. The bronze sculpture "Recovery" by Felix Pfeifer and two small bronze bears by Rudolf Löhner are placed in the middle of the rose garden . At the southeast corner of the rose garden at the Kaffee Rosengarten, the sandstone sculpture “Große Kniende” by Otto Rost marks the end of the garden and thus also of the Neustadt bank of the Elbe. Today it stands on the pedestal on which the bronze sculpture "Girl with Gazelle" by Georg Wrba stood. Since April 22, 1999, the sculpture "ani-mal" by Steffen Bachmann has stood on the Elbe side of the intermediate piece on the base of a bull sculpture created by Ernst Moritz Geyger. The two sculptures were lost during the Second World War.

Reinemer's plastic in front of the Hotel Bellevue with flood protection

Not far from the Augustusgarten, at the entrance to the pedestrian tunnel, there is a sculpture depicting the court jester Fröhlich . The small bronze sculpture from 1978 was made by Heinrich Apel . It stands on the site of the former “ Narrenhäusel ” restaurant , which was Fröhlich's house. A ceramic graffito by the Schraden painter Hans Nadler is attached to the Augustus Bridge. The picture from 1938 shows scenes from Dresden's history. The sculpture "Beauty and the Beast" by Detlef Reinemer has stood between the log cabin and the Hotel Bellevue since 1986 .

On the Elbe-side wall of the Hotel Bellevue, three sculptures were placed as Baroque adaptations in 1985/1986. These are the “Seated” by Miroslav Klimes , “Plastic with a billy goat” by Christian Schulze and “Woman with a satyr ” by Johannes Peschel . Next to it is a fountain by Vinzenz Wanitschke . In the inner courtyard of the hotel there is a larger than life “female nude” by Gerd Jaeger . Jaeger created the bronze sculpture in 1984/1985. The bronze sculpture “Family Körner and their circle in Dresden” by Wolf-Eike Kuntsche at the approximate location of the Körnerwohnhaus is a reminder of the Dresden artist family around Christian Gottfried Körner . The still life, created between 1985 and 1987, stands on a granite base and is framed by a cube-shaped steel frame with an edge length of 80 centimeters. The entire work of art is 2.5 meters high. Two marble slabs with gilded letters are reminiscent of the writer Theodor Körner , a member of the Körner family, and Friedrich Schiller , who lived with the Körners. The panels are attached to the wall of the Japanese Palace at the location of the former Körner Museum (Körnerstraße 7), they date from 1862 and are 68 by 110 centimeters in size. On the west side of the hotel is a portrait relief created by Peter Pöppelmann from 1904. Countess Elisa von der Recke and Christoph August Tiedge are shown on the 160 by 98 centimeter bronze relief . In 1990, a larger-than-life marble Icarus sculpture by Charlotte Sommer-Landgraf was erected in the neighboring Palaisgarten .
