New Glasgow ( Gael. Baile Beag / Glaschu Ùr ) is a city in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in Pictou County .
It lies on the East River of Pictou and forms with the neighboring communities Stellarton , Westville , Trenton (Nova Scotia) Trenton and Pictou the fourth largest metropolitan area in the province.
history
Deacon Thomas Fraser founded the city in 1784. The first trading post was opened in 1809. In 1840 George MacKenzie opened the city's first shipyard .
economy
New Glasgow is the industrial center of the region. The city's main employers are a Michelin tire factory (1,400 employees), a Convergys call center (900 employees), a Kimberly-Clark paper mill (1,300 employees) and Trenton Works, a railroad car manufacturer (1,200 employees).
