New Orleans Public Belt Railroad

The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad is an American railroad company . The AAR classifies it as a Terminal and Switching Railroad . The company is based in New Orleans . It is the owner and operator of the Huey P. Long Bridge (longest railroad bridge in the world) over the Mississippi River in New Orleans.

The company was founded on March 8, 1904 and began public operations in 1911. It is owned by the City of New Orleans and administered by the Public Belt Railroad Commission.

The tracks have a total length of 200 km (38 km of which are track). The company connects the right of the river Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF with the left Canadian National Railway , Kansas City Southern Railway , CSX and Norfolk Southern . As of December 31, 2004, it had 9 locomotives in stock. In recent years, the volume of transport has risen sharply, 129,000 freight wagons were moved in 1999, and 180,000 in 2003. Around 85% of the traffic is generated by the transport services between the connected railways.
