The Newhall Pass Interchange is an interchange on the Newhall Pass north of Los Angeles in the United States . In the intersection, Interstate 5 , which runs from the Mexican to the Canadian border , meets California State Route 14 , which leads to Inyokern , 190 km away . In the area of the cross there are two bypass tunnels for trucks, which were built as the four-lane US Highway 99 .
The motorway junction is located in an area that has been repeatedly hit by earthquakes. In 1971, part of the cross collapsed in the San Fernando earthquake , as well as in the Northridge earthquake in 1994 , although it was reinforced after the first collapse.
On October 13, 2007, there was a serious accident in one of the bypass tunnels, leaving several dead and injured. The tunnel was able to reopen a month later on November 15th.
