Nicholas Horsfall

Nicholas Horsfall (born September 19, 1946 in London , † January 1, 2019 ) was a British classical philologist and Virgil specialist.

Life

Nicholas Horsfall was the son of Tom Horsfall, a staff officer in the Royal Navy, and Sophie (Sonia) Szapiro.

Horsfall attended Westminster School , followed by studies at Peterhouse , Cambridge and Corpus Christi College , Oxford, where he was awarded a DPhil in 1971. received his doctorate . His main academic teachers were Edward J. Kenney and Charles Oscar Brink in Cambridge , Eduard Fraenkel , Robin GM Nisbet and, above all, Margaret Hubbard in Oxford .

Horsfall then taught at University College London from 1971 to 1987, after which he was a private scholar in Italy from 1987 to 2000, particularly in Rome, where he lived with his Italian wife. After returning to Great Britain, he first settled in Oxfordshire, and in 2003 he moved back to the northern Highlands of Scotland. Most recently, Horsfall taught as an honorary professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Durham .

Horsfall wrote numerous articles about Horace , Sallust , Cornelius Nepos , Petron and other authors of Roman literature and Roman culture. Nevertheless, Virgil Horsfall was undisputed favorite author, for whose oeuvre he was considered one of the leading interpreters worldwide. His comments on individual books by Virgils Aeneis have received wide attention , such as Book 7 (1995), Book 11 (2003), Book 3 (2006), Book 2 (2008) and Book 6 (2013).
