Nicholas Clayton "Nick" Mullens (* 21st March 1995 in Hoover , Alabama ) is an American American football player at the position of quarterback . He played college football for the University of Southern Mississippi and has been with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) since 2017 .

Early years

Mullens attended Spain Park High School in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham , Alabama. In his final season in 2012, he threw 3,649 yards and 40 touchdowns in seven interceptions and brought 290 of 452 passes to his goal. He was named Alabama State Gatorade Football Player of the Year.

college

From 2013 to 2016, Mullens played football in college . He attended the University of Southern Mississippi and played there for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the NCAA Division I FBS.

Overall, he came in the four years on 928 successful passes in 1546 pass attempts and 11,994 yards and 87 thrown touchdowns . At college, Mullens set several records that Brett Favre , Super Bowl XXXI winner and three-time NFL Most Valuable Player , had set before him.

NFL

In the NFL Draft 2017 Mullens was not selected and was later by the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent committed. In the final season line-up of the 49ers he was not considered and was in the practice squad for the entire season .

After starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his cruciate ligament in the third week of the 2018 season with the Kansas City Chiefs , Mullens moved up as a second replacement behind CJ Beathard in the active squad.

After a hand injury to substitute Beathard, this also dropped out for the game in the 9th week against the Oakland Raiders , so Mullens made his NFL debut. In the 34-3 win over the Raiders, Mullens impressed with three touchdown passes, 262 yards and 16 complete passes in 22 attempts and a quarterback rating of 151.9, making him the best quarterback result on his debut since the NFL merged with the AFL scored in 1970 (at least 20 attempts to pass).
