Nicolai Eigtved
Nicolai Eigtved , born as Niels Madsen Eigtved (born June 4, 1701 in Egtved , Sjælland , Denmark ; † June 7, 1754 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish architect , interior designer and from 1735 royal Danish court architect .
Life
Eigtved was the son of Mads Nielsen and Dorthe Hansdatter . He was a leading exponent of Rococo in Denmark from the 1730s to 1740s , along with his colleague and rival Laurids de Thurah . He built some of the most famous buildings in Denmark in an unprecedented number.
He had previously made numerous trips to Germany and Poland , where he studied architecture in Berlin , Munich , Dresden and Warsaw . Other architectural studies had taken him to Rome and Vienna . In the course of his stays abroad and above all at the royal court of August of Saxony in Dresden, Eigtved was formed in the Rococo style.
Therefore, it was he who not only started planning the new Frederiksstad (now a district of Copenhagen) from 1748 , but u. a. also the construction of the Amalienborg Square and the construction of the Frederikskirche (also: Marble Church, Danish: Frederikskirken) and the Amalienborg Palace with its four palaces , today the seat of the royal family, should take over. Eigtved drew up a plan for the houses and had to give its approval to all buildings. Through his own buildings as well as through his censorship, he created a district that became one of the most beautiful of its era. The completion after Eigtved's death was entrusted to the French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin (1720–1799), who introduced neoclassicism as the new architectural style of the time in Denmark.
From 1744 to 1751 Eigtved built the Friedrichsruh Palace in Drage, Schleswig-Holstein . He was also instrumental in founding the Royal Danish Academy of Art , whose first president he was from 1751 and which took its place in Charlottenborg Palace .
