history

Bookshop and publisher 1700 to 1858

In 1700 the Wittenberg publisher Gottfried Zimmermann founded a branch bookstore in Berlin, probably on Heilig-Geist-Straße. In 1703 he handed it over to Johann Wilhelm Meyer.

In 1713 Zimmermann transferred the bookstore to his son-in-law, Christoph Gottlieb Nicolai . He founded a publishing house there, for which this year is the founding date. Both had been in Poststrasse 4 since 1733 at the latest. In 1752, the eldest son Gottfried Wilhelm Nicolai took over the management. After his early death in 1759, his brother Christoph Friedrich Nicolai , who was a famous enlightener, took over. Despite initial reluctance, he led the publishing house and bookstore to great importance and made them the literary and intellectual center of the city. In 1787 he moved it to Brüderstraße 13 (today Nikolaihaus).

After his death in 1811, his son-in-law Daniel Parthey took over the publishing bookstore, and in 1822 his son Gustav Parthey . In 1858 he separated bookstore and publishing house and continued to run it as Nicolaische Verlagsbuchstlung (G. Parthey) . The successor still exists today.

Nicolaische Buchhandlung 1858 to 1945

He sold the bookstore to the Polish publisher M. Jagielski . This led them as Nicolaische Assortment Buchhandlung M. Jagielski . In 1863 he gave it to Friedrich Wrede and Fritz Borstell , who ran it as the Nicolaische Buchhandlung (Wrede and Borstell) . There they founded the largest lending library in Germany.

In 1872 Hans Reimarus became a new partner (after Wrede). Since then it has been called the Nicolaische Buchhandlung Borstell und Reimarus . In 1883 a branch was opened at Potsdamer Straße 123a. In 1892 the head office was moved to Dorotheenstrasse 75, where a new building had been built for it.

In 1901 Reinhold Borstell became the new owner. In 1929 the bookstore was taken over by a larger company. Branches were opened on Kurfürstendamm and in Rheinstrasse 65 in Friedenau, and later another one in Saarlandstrasse (today Stresemannstrasse). In 1945 the buildings in the city center were almost completely destroyed.
