Nicolas Charles Seringe

Nicolas Charles Seringe (born December 3, 1776 in Longjumeau , † December 29, 1858 in Lyon ) was a French botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Ser. "

Live and act

Seringe studied medicine in Paris, but was drafted into the Republican army shortly before his doctorate, where he served as a surgeon. He moved to Germany with Jean-Victor Moreau's army . After the war he settled in Bern .

He taught French in Bern from 1801 to 1820 and in Geneva from 1820 to 1830. Seringe specialized in botany and began teaching at the university in Bern. In 1830 he became director of the botanical garden in Lyon and from 1834 to 1858 professor at the University .

He was mainly interested in agriculture and horticulture. In 1855 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . He died in poverty three years later in 1858.

Honors

The plant genus Seringia Spreng is named after him . from the spindle tree family (Celastraceae).
