geography
Geographical location
Niederzissen is located in a side valley of the Rhine that is interesting in terms of geology and culture. The historic valley path from the Rhine leads between volcanic mountains over the town to the Eifel, including the Bausenberg , Germany's best-preserved horseshoe-iron crater.
Community structure
The local community Niederzissen consists of the two districts Niederzissen and Rodder as well as the residential areas "Haus Waldfrieden" and "Kurheim Bausenberg".
history
Niederzissen is one of the oldest settlements in the wider area, the oldest finds of which, including a fragment of a jadeite ax, kept in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , date back to the Neolithic Age . The name "Zissen" comes from the Celtic and is rendered as "backward", for example from "Rhine backward = remote place". The presence of settling Celts is documented by finds of weapons and tools. Furthermore, excavations from Roman times have proven settlements near the old Roman road from Sinzig via Mayen to Trier, which suggests another name derivation from the Celtic god name Cissonius . Zissen, as the place was called at the time, is mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation for the St. Cassiusstift in Bonn . The document without a date comes from the 9th century. The first dated document from 1179 contains a confirmation of “possession in Zissen” by Pope Alexander III. to Adalbert II of Metz . Zissen belonged to the Olbrück rule from around 1150 (construction of Olbrück Castle ) until the beginning of the French occupation in 1794 . Niederzissen has belonged to Prussia since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, to the then newly formed district of Ahrweiler in the Koblenz administrative district since 1816, and to the Rhine Province from 1822 . Initially under the mayor's office in Königsfeld , Niederzissen itself became the seat of a mayor's office in 1883 . The regional reform in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1969/1970 made Niederzissen the administrative seat of the Brohlal Association, which was newly formed in 1970 .
On January 1, 1979, the place Rodder , an area with 121 inhabitants, was umgemeindet from the municipality of Niederdürenbach to Niederzissen. The incorporation happened at the request of a large part of the Rodder population.

coat of arms
Blazon : "Diagonally divided, above twelve-fold red-silver stiffeners, below in blue a growing silver truncated cone with a funnel-shaped opening, broken to the right." | |
Justification of the coat of arms: The twelve-fold red and silver status is the coat of arms (there silver-red) of the Waldbott von Bassenheim family , who had owned the rulership of Olbrück since 1555, to which Niederzissen also belonged, the open cone shows the extinct volcano Bausenberg in stylized form , a geological peculiarity on the outskirts of Niederzissen. |
