The Niegripper Connection Canal (NVK) is a federal waterway of waterway class  IV in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . It creates a connection between the Elbe at kilometer 343.59 and the Elbe-Havel Canal at km 325.95 near the village of Niegripp and is 1.56 kilometers long. The canal has a lock just before the Elbe . The Magdeburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for the administration .

history

In order to shorten the waterway between the fortress city of Magdeburg and the residential cities on the Havel and Spree , the Prussian King Friedrich II initiated studies and plans for the construction of an artificial waterway between the Elbe and Havel through Minister Gröne in 1740. After 1743, construction of the Plauer Canal began. It and the Ihle Canal later became the Elbe-Havel Canal. The way on the waterway between Magdeburg and Berlin was shortened by 150 kilometers. For decades, the western end of the Elbe-Havel Canal, and thus also the Niegripper connecting canal, owed its appearance and shape to the unfinished ideas and projects for the expansion of the Mittelland Canal in this area. With the beginning of the Second World War , the construction work to create a waterway that would cross Germany, which would later become the Mittelland Canal, independent of the fluctuations in the water level of the great rivers Weser and Elbe , was stopped. Only with German reunification could the project, now called “Project Number 17”, be resumed and implemented. Until the opening of the canal bridge over the Elbe in autumn 2003, the Niegripper connecting canal was the only shipping connection to the canal area on the middle Elbe alongside the Pareyer connecting canal.

Places and bridges

The town of Niegripp is located near the short canal, giving its name to the shipping canal. Immediately to the east of the lock is the Niegripper road bridge over the canal.

The Niegripp lock

Today's Niegripp lock was previously known as the “New Lock” because there was a lock at another location during the Ihle Canal . Remnants of this lock have been preserved (picture).

  • When the waterway cross was opened to traffic in 2003, ship passages in the Niegripper connecting canal decreased significantly. Since July 2010, the Niegripp lock has been remote-controlled from the Hohenwarthe double savings lock, which leads to longer waiting times.
