Nigel Rogers

Nigel David Rogers (born March 21, 1935 in Wellington , Shropshire , England ) is an English opera singer ( tenor ), conductor and vocal teacher .

Life

From 1953 to 1956 he was a choral scholar at King's College in Cambridge with Boris Ord . He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1956 and completed his studies there in 1960 with a Master of Arts . From 1959 to 1964, his teachers included the baritone Gerhard Hüsch from the University of Music in Munich .

In the beginning of his career as a singer, he devoted himself to early music and was a founding member of the early music studio in 1960 . From 1964 he also made a name for himself as a baroque interpreter. He made his operatic debut in Amsterdam in 1969 .

Since the early 1970s he has been teaching as a singing teacher at the Schola Cantorum in Basel . From 1978 until his retirement in 2000 he taught singing at the Royal College of Music in London . Since 1980 he has been an honorary member of the Royal College of Music. In 1979 he founded the Chiaroscuro vocal ensemble for the performance of Italian music. In 1985 he made his debut as a conductor.

Rogers has made many recordings, ranging from Guillaume de Machaut to Franz Schubert . He dedicated himself particularly to the compositions of Claudio Monteverdi . Rogers also writes scientific publications and writes for magazines.
