Nikolai Alexejewitsch Severzow
Nikolai Severtzov ( Russian Николай Алексеевич Северцов ; born October 24 . Jul / 5. November 1827 greg. In Voronezh Governorate , † January 26 jul. / 7. February 1885 greg. On Don ) was a Russian zoologist and explorer.
Severzow studied science in Moscow . In 1857/58 he undertook an expedition to the Aralocaspic lowlands . He also took part in an expedition to Tashkent and explored the Tianschan Mountains to the sources of the Syr-Darja in 1867/68 . In 1874 he was a member of the great Amu Darja expedition and led an expedition to the Pamir in 1877/78 .
Severzow died in 1885 by drowning in a tributary of the Don. The Black-breasted grouse ( Bonasa sewerzowi ) of the subfamily of the Grouse is named after him. The same applies to Mount Severtsev in Antarctica.
His son Alexei Nikolayevich Severzow was also a zoologist and paleontologist.
