Nikolaus Hermann Blome (born September 16, 1963 in Bonn ) is a German journalist , commentator and author .

Since 2020 he has been Head of Politics and Society in the central editorial office of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and online columnist for the news magazine Der Spiegel . Life

Nikolaus Blome is the youngest son of the journalist and school film producer Hermann Blome, who died in 1998 .

Period soldier and studies

After graduating from high school in 1983, Blome was a contract soldier in the German Armed Forces for two years , most recently with the rank of corporal . Of this, he spent 15 months at the NATO headquarters SHAPE in Mons (Belgium). From 1985 to 1989 he studied history with minor subjects economics and political science at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1989 he completed his studies in Bonn with a Magister Artium (M.A.).

At the end of the 1980s, he did an internship at the Rheinische Post . From 1990 to 1991 he graduated from the Henri Nannen School of Journalism in Hamburg.

Journalistic career

Blome worked from 1991 to 1993 as a business editor at Tagesspiegel in Berlin and from 1995 to 1997 as a correspondent for regional newspapers in Brussels .

Then he switched to the Axel Springer Group . From 1997 to 1999 he was head of foreign policy at Die Welt and from 1999 to 2001 office manager of the newspaper in Brussels. In May 2001 he became deputy editor-in-chief of Welt in Berlin and from 2002 headed the domestic affairs and parliamentary offices. Since August 2006 Blome (together with Rolf Kleine ) has been head of the capital city office of Bild . In May 2011, he became deputy editor-in-chief and head of the economic department.

On October 15, 2013, Blome moved to Spiegel-Verlag , where he was deputy editor-in-chief of Spiegel and Spiegel Online as head of the capital city office. The personnel was very controversial among the staff at Spiegel . The editors of Der Spiegel also had different opinions: Franziska Augstein criticized the decision, while her brother Jakob advocated Blome's appointment. family

Blome is married. He has two sons and a daughter.

Media appearances

Blome appears regularly in public, mostly as a guest on talk shows on current topics. In this context he was best known as a supporter of the then Federal Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg in the programs Maybrit Illner , Hart aber fair and Menschen bei Maischberger . He also appeared as a representative of the Bild newspaper during the Wulff affair with Günther Jauch, among others .

The television station Phoenix developed the Augstein and Blome format together with the journalist and publisher Jakob Augstein . It has been broadcast every Friday since January 2011. There the two argue with left (Augstein) and liberal - conservative (Blome) positions. In the broadcast on May 3, 2019, Augstein and Blome referred to themselves as "leftists" and "rightists".
