Nicholas I

Nikolaus I (also Niklot , * before 1164; † May 25, 1200 near Waschow ) was Prince of Mecklenburg since 1178.

He was a son of the Obotrite Prince Wertislaw , Lord of Rostock .

He fought with the Danes and Frederick I against Henry the Lion and, supported by the Danes, led war against his cousin Heinrich Borwin I from 1183–1185 . This family war in Mecklenburg and the lack of outside help provided the Danish King Knut VI. the opportunity to expand its position on the Baltic Sea . Nicholas I and his cousin had to submit to the Danes as vassals in 1185 . But he got the rule of Rostock as a fief. In the war against Adolf III. von Schauenburg and Holstein in alliance with the Danes, he fell childless on May 25, 1200 (or 1201) in the battle of Waschow , which secured the territory of what is now southwestern Mecklenburg for the princes of Mecklenburg.
