No 1 poultry
No 1 Poultry is a post-modern office and commercial building in London . It's in the City of London on the street called Poultry ( poultry market ), very close to the Bank of England .
It is the last building designed by the architect James Stirling and was completed in 1998, six years after his death, by his partner Michael Wilford . Previously, the neo-Gothic office building of the jewelry company Mappin and Webb stood here , the demolition of which in 1994 sparked heated controversy.
Completion was delayed due to a sensational archaeological find. The Archaeological Service of the Museum of London carried out excavations. One of the things they came across was a wooden Roman sewer that once ran along the east-west main road from Londinium . The dendrochronological examination showed that it dates from AD 47; this is now considered the most likely year of foundation of London.
