Norbert Brox

Norbert Brox (born June 23, 1935 in Paderborn ; † September 30, 2006 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Catholic theologian . He was Professor of Ancient Church History and Patrology and holder of the Chair of Historical Theology at the University of Regensburg .

Life

Norbert Brox studied theology, philosophy and classical philology in Paderborn and Munich from 1955 to 1962 after completing his school-leaving examination in 1955 at the Petrinum Gymnasium in Brilon (North Rhine-Westphalia) and earned his doctorate in New Testament exegesis in 1961. In 1965 he received the Cardinal Innitzer Prize . After several years as an assistant at the International Research Center for Basic Science in Salzburg, as a non-priest, he succeeded in gaining teaching authorization at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Graz in 1966 .

In 1969 he was appointed associate professor for Catholic theology and religious education at the PH Munich . At the Catholic Faculty of the University of Regensburg , he had been teaching the subjects of Ancient Church History and Patrology since 1968. After a waiting period of six years due to his lay status, the faculty appointed him to the chair of historical theology in 1973, which included the subjects he had already represented. He was able to hold this position until his retirement in 2000.

In 1993 Brox was appointed to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Brox was co-editor of the Fontes Christiani source collection . For them he translated the main work of the theologian Irenaeus of Lyons Adversus haereses . Brox also wrote the RAC article on Irenaeus of Lyon.

Norbert Brox had been married since 1962; his marriage had two children.
