Norbert Kamp

Norbert Kamp (born August 24, 1927 in Niese , Lippe; † October 12, 1999 in Braunschweig ) was a German historian and president of the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

After completing his doctorate with Percy Ernst Schramm in Göttingen, Kamp was a scholarship holder at the German Historical Institute in Rome from 1957 to 1961 . In 1969 he completed his habilitation in Münster , in 1971 he became a professor at the TU Braunschweig , where he was rector from 1976 to 1978. From 1979 to 1992 he was President of the University of Göttingen. Despite his official obligations, he always found time to speak at international congresses in Italy on the Hohenstaufen history of southern Italy and to publish his contributions.

In his dissertation, Kamp already dealt with a topic from the Staufer era. The focus on southern Staufer Italy is a result of his fellowship in Rome. His main work is Church and Monarchy in the Staufer Kingdom of Sicily , of which only the first, prosopographical part about the bishops could be published. There are also numerous articles dealing with the people and structures of the Norman-Staufer Empire.

Since 1979 he has been a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

His scientific legacy is kept at the German Historical Institute and made accessible in a project sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Foundation .
