Norberto Avila

Norberto Ávila (born September 9, 1936 in Angra do Heroismo , Azores , Portugal ) is a Portuguese playwright, novelist , poet and translator.

Life

Ávila comes from the Azores. From 1963 to 1965 he studied theater studies at the Universite de Theater du Naciones in Paris . From 1973 to 1975 he was editor and publisher of the theater magazine "Teatro em Movimento". Between 1974 and 1978 he was also the theater representative at the Ministry of Culture in Lisbon . From 1981 he was editor-in-chief for the theater show "Fila 1" at RTP for several years.

As a playwright, his work has been translated into German, Spanish, Polish and Serbian. On the other hand, his pieces were performed in Portugal, Germany , Austria , Belgium , South Korea , Croatia , Slovenia , Spain , France , the Netherlands , Italy , the Czech Republic , Romania , Serbia and Switzerland .

In total, he was the author of around 30 plays, a novel, two volumes of short stories, and a volume of poetry. As a translator, he mainly translated the works of William Shakespeare , Tennessee Williams , Arthur Miller , Friedrich Schiller and Rainer Werner Fassbinder into Portuguese.

In Germany he is best known for the children's play " Hakim's Stories ". The work had its world premiere in Lisbon in 1969 and its German premiere at the Schwerin State Theater on August 8, 1976 in the former GDR , under the direction and recitation of Horst Rehberg . The translation from Portuguese was done by Thomas Brasch . Hakim's story is a spoken theater piece and fairy tale for children aged 8 and up. Since then it has seen numerous performances in Germany, making Ávila one of the most famous playwrights of modern Portugal in German-speaking countries. The work " The Island of King Sleep " was translated into German in 1982 and made into a radio play in 1984 for NDR .

Two plays by the author - D. João no Jardim das Delicias 1989 and O marido aussente 1990 - were filmed.
