geography

Nordheim is located in Grabfeld in southern Thuringia .

history

Nordheim was first mentioned in 774. The place protected itself with a wall and a moat around the whole village. Three gatehouses gave access. There was also a castle and a fortified church. The castle in the middle of the village was the predecessor of the later moated castle. Since 1360 the lords of Stein have been documented as lords of the place. Through the imperial knighthood, they built up a relatively autonomous petty rulership up to the Imperial Deputation Headquarters in 1803.

In 1808, the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen and the Grand Duchy of Würzburg agreed on an area swap: the Saxon fiefs Filke, Neustädtles, Sands, Völkershausen and Willmars came to Würzburg, the Würzburg fiefs Berkach, Gleicherwiesen and Nordheim / Grabfeld went like the mixed fiefs Bibra and Walldorf an Sachsen-Meiningen. Since then, Nordheim has belonged to the Maßfeld office in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen.

Since 1920 the place belongs to the Free State of Thuringia . In 1945 the moated castle and parts of the fortifications were destroyed.
