The Nordic salmon sparrow ( Paralepis coregonoides ) is a deep-sea fish from the family of barracudinas (Paralepididae). It lives in the northern Atlantic between 65 ° and 30 ° north latitude and in its secondary seas, e.g. B. the western Mediterranean and the northern, deep North Sea .

The Nordic salmon sparrow has an elongated body that can reach a length of half a meter. The pelvic fins start a little in front of the short dorsal fin. The anal fin is supported by 22 to 24 fin rays. A small adipose fin is present. It lies over the end of the anal fin. The upper jaw extends to the nostrils.

Way of life

The Nordic salmon sparrow lives alone or in small schools at depths of 50 to 1000 meters, mostly between 200 and 600 meters in the eastern Ionian Sea to depths of 1032 meters. It feeds on small fish, shrimp and at times also on zooplankton . The fish migrate to tropical and subtropical seas to reproduce. They spawn near the sea surface from March to September.
