The Norisring is a car and motorcycle racing track in Nuremberg . The Norisring is a so-called street circuit , which means that a race takes place on roads that are otherwise used by normal traffic. The name Norisring is the result of a competition in 1950. The Noris is an allegorical name for Nuremberg from the 17th century.

history

On May 18, 1947, the first motorcycle race took place on a track around the Zeppelin grandstand. The Steintribüne is part of the resultant from the Zeppelinwiese Zeppelin field which for Reichsparteitagsgelaende belongs. Until 1957, motorcycle races were the focus of events, which was probably also due to the fact that Nuremberg was the headquarters of numerous motorcycle manufacturers at the time ( Ardie , Hecker , Mars , Triumph , Victoria , Hercules and Zündapp ). Car races took place as early as 1948, which gained dominance in the early 1960s. Until 1973 and then again from 1984 to 1989, these were mainly races with prototype sports cars . Today mainly DTM races take place there.

In the course of the Norisring races since 1947, three car racing drivers and two motorcycle racing drivers were killed. The most prominent victim was Pedro Rodríguez . The last fatal accident occurred on June 24, 1988. The Hungarian racing driver Csaba Kesjár died at the Norisring when he drove into the guardrails at around 200 km / h.

route

Over the decades, the course has been changed several times, the length of the route was initially 2 km, later up to 4 km. The circuit has been 2.3 km long since 1972. The DTM currently (2018) is driving 2 × 55 minutes plus one lap. Since July 2005 there has been a pedestrian tunnel between the stone grandstand and the Zeppelin field . Spectators can now easily switch to the other side of the track during the races.

In order to convert the area from public roads between Zeppelinfeld and Dutzendteich into a race track, the 2.3 km long route with 7 km crash barriers, 6 km FIA safety fences, 18 km safety ropes, 2 km concrete sliding walls, 70 office containers, 120 toilet cabins, 870 km Power cables, 250 km of water pipes and 10 km of barriers will be fitted, as well as 17.8 km of fence elements to transform the entire site into a closed event location. This takes place within 3 weeks, of which 2 weeks are required for assembly before the race weekend and 1 week for dismantling after the race weekend. This requires 10,000 working hours, 600 workers, planners and officials. The responsibility for this lies with the Motorsport Club Nürnberg eV (MCN).

Grandstands

In addition to the stone grandstand, five more grandstands will be built around the route. In the other free spaces and the so-called natural grandstands, spectators can see some spectacular self-constructions. Due to the danger of collapse and the renovation work, parts of the stone grandstand have been closed again and again since 2008.

Events

The most famous motorsport event is the annual Norisring race , a run for the DTM . The annual race weekend usually takes place in late June or early July. For years it was called 200 miles from Nuremberg . The current name of the event is Int. ADAC Norisring Speed Weekend . You can see training, qualifications and races for the DTM, the Formula 3 European Championship and other series. In addition, a supporting program with stunt shows, rides by race taxis and music concerts is performed.

The motorsport season at the Norisring starts every year at the end of March or beginning of April on the extended straight in front of the stone grandstand with the racing slalom for the city of Nuremberg's prize . In 2006, however, this traditional event for the German automobile slalom championship did not take place. It has been carried out again since 2008 despite a lawsuit from residents.

The stone grandstand meeting, a well-known meeting for air-cooled Volkswagens and classic Porsches , has been taking place in the start / finish area every year for over 20 years .

Between 2001 and 2007 the Norisring was revived for races of classic motorcycles (Classic-Motorrad-Cup). The Classic-Motorrad-Cup was organized privately by the classic motorcycle racer Werner Anton Pedack from Fürth. More than 200 classic racing drivers competed at the respective events, including double world champions Dieter Braun, Heinz Rosner and many others. The highlight was a DHM (German Historical Motorcycle Championship) with DMSB title championship run in cooperation with the VFV. Local residents sued the motorcycle cup. From 2008 this event was no longer approved for noise protection reasons.
