Nostrification

Nostrification (from Latin noster or nostra "our [e]") describes the recognition of foreign school and university degrees as well as academic degrees . In many countries it is a prerequisite for exercising certain professions or taking up certain training or further education.

The assessment of qualifications acquired abroad is the main task of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB), a department of the Conference of Ministers of Education . Information on this has been provided in the anabin database since 2000 .

Changes since 2001

With the decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of September 21, 2001 (implementation in state law took up to two years), the obligation to nostrify titles legally acquired abroad in the Federal Republic of Germany was ended and made the legal responsibility of the title holder. Protected professional qualifications usually still have to go through the nostrification administrative process.

Foreign titles and degrees

Holders of foreign degrees now have to ensure themselves (i.e. independently) that they properly manage them in accordance with the requirements of the state higher education law in their place of residence.

Professional qualifications obtained abroad

The nostrification of qualifications , not degrees or titles, but usually legal elements that qualify a profession, where personal responsibility does not apply within the framework of the respective state higher education law, is generally carried out in accordance with the national law of the recognizing state.
