geography

More detailed situation map

The municipality is located a little north of the city center, surrounded by the La Cité-Limoilou district . It is bordered by the avenue Simon-Napoléon-Parent, the rue des Commissaires Ouest and the rue Saint-Anselm. It includes the Hôpital général de Québec and some religious buildings associated with this hospital, including an Augustinian convent , the parish church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges and a museum. The municipality also has a small cemetery in which, among others, Louis-Joseph de Montcalm is buried.

history

The land near the Rivière Saint-Charles was initially owned by the Récollets . This Franciscan order built the Saint-Charles monastery around 1620. In 1629 the manor was passed to the Jesuits . The Franciscans returned to Québec in 1670 and repossessed their old property. They called their house Notre-Dame-des-Anges (" Our Lady of the Angels "). Jean-Baptiste de la Croix Chevrière de Saint-Vallier , the Bishop of Québec , bought the building in 1692 to convert it into a hospital. The Augustinian nuns took it over in 1698. The community was founded in 1855 with the sole purpose of exempting the hospital from tax liability. Today the Hôpital général serves as a nursing home .

Population and administration

According to the 2011 census, Notre-Dame-des-Anges had 394 inhabitants. These are exclusively residents of the nursing home and the attached Augustinian convent. There is no mayor, but an administrator. The incumbent is the superior of the monastery, while three other sisters form the rest of the parish council.
