Nová Bystrica (Hungarian Újbeszterce ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia . It is located at the foot of the Kysucké Beskydy and the Kysucká vrchovina mountains , in the valley of the Bystrica river , about 27 km from Čadca and 41 km from Žilina .
The place was first mentioned in 1662 as Nová Beszterca .
In early 1981 the municipalities of Riečnica and Harvelka were annexed, but most of them were flooded in the 1980s when the Nová Bystrica reservoir was built. The village of Vychylovka (first mentioned in 1696 as Wichilowska ) also belongs to the municipality .
