history

North Districts of Novy Urengoy.jpg

With the first well near today's Novy Urengoy, the development of the Urengoy gas field started in 1966 , which led to the settlement of workers in this previously largely uninhabited area. Near the village of Urengoy ( literally "remote", "sleepy" in the Nenets ; according to other interpretations "tall grass" or "endless hills"), about 80 km east of today's city, a workers' settlement was built in the late 1960s. With the expansion of the tapped gas reserves, a new city was also created in September 1973, which was given the name Novy Urengoy , or “New Urengoy”, to distinguish it from the workers' settlement .

In 1980 Novy Urengoy, which now numbered over 16,000 inhabitants, was granted city status. In 2004, the urban settlements were Korottschajewo (Russian Коротчаево ) and Limbjajacha ( Лимбяяха ) incorporated, both about 70 km to the east on the left bank of the Pur (very close to the "old" Urengoy on the opposite river bank) are, where originally the Arctic Circle railway river should have crossed (but today the railway line bends south towards Surgut ). With these incorporations, Novy Urengoy exceeded the limit of 100,000 inhabitants and became a large city .

Economy and Transport

One of the residential areas

As the center of one of Russia's most important natural gas production areas , Novy Urengoy is now unofficially the capital of Russian gas production. The three largest companies based in Novy Urengoy are the gas production companies Urengoigasprom , Jamburggasdobytscha and Tyumenburgas , which belong to the Gazprom group and together supply almost 75% of Russian gas production.

Due to its remote location, Novy Urengoy has no trunk road connections to the rest of Russia. However, there is a railway connection via Surgut and Tobolsk to Tyumen (from there to Moscow ), as well as an airport . In the (old) Urengoy, 80 km further east, there is an important river port on the Pur , the operating company of which is based in Novy Urengoy. The gas produced near Novy Urengoy is transported to European Russia and Europe via the “Urengoy - Pomary [between Kazan and Cheboksary ] - Uzhhorod ” pipeline .
